果冻传媒 Interior Design Student Takes 1st Place in Scholarship Competition

August 9, 2017

In July 2017, Amira Mohamed, who is working on her Bachelor鈥檚 Degree in Interior Design at New England Institute of Technology, walked away with a first place finish and a $2,400 scholarship at the International Interior Design Association New England Chapter (IIDANE) Providence City Center Scholarship competition.

Amira entered the competition with a project completed in her Institutional Design Studio, Esperer, taught by Mia Alwen. 鈥淲e were asked to transform Detroit Free Press Building, Detroit, MI 48226 into a higher educational facility. I used the sun as my concept; my inspiration for my concept came from Detroit鈥檚 map. When I first looked at it I saw the shape of the sun,鈥 says Amira. 鈥淭he sun in many cultures symbolizes power, passion, and hope. That鈥檚 what I wanted for the school, and where the project name came from, because 鈥榚sperer鈥 means 鈥榟ope.鈥欌

鈥淢ost interesting were the comments from the jury, who were made up of Interior Design professionals, who said that the students work showed passion for the profession, technical skills and most important telling the design story from concept to completion,鈥 says Philip Marks, Architect, LEED AP and Chairman of 果冻传媒鈥檚 Department of Design + Architectural Technology.

Amira recently shone at another design competition this past March. At the International Interior Design Association鈥檚 New England Chapter Design Competition, she earned the second place in the college and university competition. The completion was open for students from across New England to showcase their interior design projects from all aspects of the Design, Real Estate, Construction and Engineering Industries. In addition, New England Tech鈥檚 Gillian Eminger was also among the top five finalists.

Amira鈥檚 project, NeWave, and Gillian鈥檚 submission, The Moonlight Tower Hotel, were completed as part of their ID Studio V Hospitality class taught by Dawn L. Edmondson, MFA, IA, Associate Professor, Department of Design + Architectural Building Technology & Humanities and Social Sciences.

鈥淣ew England Tech has given me the tools and helped me to transform my ideas and imagination into real designs,鈥 says Amira. 鈥湽炒 is a hands-on school where you are not only learning the latest technology and software but it gets you engaged to apply that education to real life projects.鈥

鈥淎mira and Gillian are both extremely talented and deserve high praise for their accomplishments,鈥 says Marks. 鈥淭hese results reflect the quality and competitiveness of our Associate and Bachelor鈥檚 degree programs in Interior Design.鈥
